BEFORE YOU SEND A LETTER: Please include your return address ON THE LETTER. A return address on the envelope is not sufficient because they are often rendered unreadable in the mail. I end up with a nice letter but no way to respond. Also, letters are often separated from their envelopes. If you would like a reply, YOU MUST TYPE OR PRINT YOUR RETURN ADDRESS ON THE LETTER ITSELF.

Believe it or not I’ve had readers send me letters desperately begging for a reply, with only a scribbled, unreadable signature and no return address of any kind. I’m left with no way to even know the person’s name.

I prefer typed letters because they are easier to read, but if you can only send a hand-written letter that’s fine, too. Just remember to print your return address on the letter itself.
