The last name thing bothered me a bit, but fact is a lot could have happened during the interveining time with the names. Richard could have gone back to using Cypher, Kahlan had siblings that could have produced more Amnels. But then there's Nathan who probably would have had children eventually now that he is out and on the prowl.

Maybe Richard and Kahlans kids chose the name they wanted to use be it Rahl or Amnel. But about the Rahl line dieing out, I don't see what's so controvercial, families die out all the time and that could certainly be the case.

My only concern with the entire thing was how does it read to a non-SOT reader. Does it grab you enough and does the "other wordliness" come across in the right way?

I kept trying to ask myself if I didnt know anything SOT how suspenseful is it and what does my mind conjure up.

And on that note I do not think this book is quite up to Terry's quality. I think this book was actually "slammed" into production to satisfy a need to end the SOT finally due to LOTS. It kind of had that feel to me. There is enough open in the fact that records were lost and so forth to make returning to the series possible should the opportunity or desire present itself but I seriously doubt that Terry will anytime soon especially while the dreaded show still airs.

I appreciate the book but Im not looking for anything more SOT out of it. Im very interested in the next book to see if it really lives up to the promise of being a real departure from SOT and how well Terry does with it.

I on purpose didn't review the book in any of the threads here because I didn't have a very high opinion of it (and my sister gave birth the day it came out). It was very "airport novel" in it's style. Clipped dialogue, short chapters, nothing really challenging in the subject matter. It worked as a quick little thriller, but nothing more. Hell, I can't even remember the names of the bad guys. I didn't ever stop reading to take a breath like the other books. I didn't spend days thinking about it after I read it, it washed over me like a Dale Brown or a Michael Crichton.

Really - michael crichton washes over you?

Granted some of his novels are not that good but I quite like some of them. Certainly not a character driven author though.
